My writing journey, like yours, has been shaped by the uncanny flow of ideas, relationships, events, landscapes, cultural winds, and lived experience.
By being born a Boomer, into a privileged Western culture, to a refugee-immigrant mother and a first-generation-Canadian father. By silencing my socially despised mother tongue and learning English in school. By feeling terrified to write, compelled to write, thrilled to write, grateful to write - even now. By romancing the written word for as long as I can recall. By earning a bachelor of education degree and a masters in communications studies. By writing newspaper stories, publications for business and government, marketing copy, scholarly articles, speeches for politicians, a creative non-fiction book, a writing column for an online magazine, and a host of other things. By standing on the shoulders of writers and writing teachers who have welcomed me into their pages. By learning from integral thought leaders and practitioners of various wisdom traditions. By guiding writers, helping graduate students birth their professional voices, and leading transformative writing workshops internationally. By collaborating with others on writing that serves something greater than ourselves. By following the creative current wherever it leads, and now there is a novel - a meditation on living and dying - slowly trickling onto the page. By living much of my adult life under clear and spacious prairie skies and nowadays with my beloved on the unceded traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation on Vancouver Island, Canada, with its overlapping distances and soft shadows, across the water from Vancouver where I was born and raised. If there is one constant that has threaded its way through my nomadic writing journey, it is attuned writing. And now I've joined forces with Thea May of Working with Voice to teach the wisdom of attuned speaking and writing to soulful and inspiring communicators. |
